More informationThe history
In 1981, the café opened its doors for the first time, and after all these years, it remains a beloved destination for many visitors. Did you know that the café was originally named ‘De Proeverij’ and was located in a different place? On October 6, 1981, the Hertog Jan Proeverij opened its doors. At that time, it was simply called ‘De Proeverij’, and the name Hertog Jan was only later associated with the café.
Initially located on the grounds of the Hertog Jan brewery, the café served as a reception area for brewery visitors. Later, it evolved into much more than that. Beer enthusiasts began to linger longer and return more frequently to sample multiple beers.
