A museum village full of stories
De Locht museum village in Melderslo shows how people lived, worked and ate in the North Limburg countryside, from a medieval farmhouse to a modern market-garden greenhouse. The museum opened on 20 April 1990 and is run by more than 250 volunteers. It began in the long-fronted farmhouse from 1859, with an old-fashioned kitchen, a box bed in the best room and a cellar full of preserving jars.
Along the three museum routes you come to the forge, where the blacksmith regularly heats the iron red-hot on Sundays, the bakehouse for the Lochtbrood, the De Merling printing works, the brewhouse and the chapel, built after an eleventh-century chapel. The medieval farmhouse is a replica of a farm from around 1320, discovered during archaeological research on the site in 2009.
Mushrooms and asparagus
The mushroom pavilion is shaped like half a mushroom: in the cap you hear the story of mushroom growing, and in the stalk there is a restaurant. The asparagus and auction building houses an auction clock from 1908; on some Sundays from April to November organic vegetables are auctioned and visitors press the button themselves.
The market-garden greenhouse shows how greenhouse horticulture grew from flat glass to high-tech greenhouses, with lettuce grown on water and tomatoes on rock wool. Between the buildings are rose, herb and vegetable gardens, and in restaurant De Hoeve you can have freshly baked Limburg vlaai or Burgundian-style mushrooms.

Tip from reception
Come on a Sunday: the blacksmith is often at work, and sometimes the bakehouse bakes bread or the auction clock is running. Check the calendar on delocht.nl beforehand. From November to March the museum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

An adult ticket costs € 12.50. Admission is free with the Museumkaart. You can also buy tickets online at winkel.delocht.nl. Parking is free.
Is De Locht accessible with a wheelchair or rollator?
Yes. The whole museum is accessible, there is a lift in the long-fronted farmhouse, there are accessible toilets in two places and you can borrow a wheelchair. In 2025 De Locht was voted the most accessible venue in Horst aan de Maas.
What is there to see at De Locht museum village?
Among other things the long-fronted farmhouse from 1859, a medieval farmhouse, the mushroom pavilion, the asparagus and auction building with an auction clock from 1908, the market-garden greenhouse, the forge, the bakehouse, the chapel and the gardens. In 2026 the exhibition LLTB 125 jaar is on show.
